Departmental Overview
The Berkeley Language Center (BLC), a program in the Division of Arts and Humanities in the College of Letters and Science, serves two primary functions: a) provide technological and pedagogical support to language instructors on the Berkeley campus, and b) support faculty (primarily language lecturers’) research on second language acquisition theory and the teaching of specific languages.

The day-to-day operations are directed by the associate director and the program and research projects are directed by a member of the faculty. Among the staff positions there are three of a technical nature: a systems administrator responsible for the BLC network, operating systems in computer labs and on staff machines, and backup of the 10+ BLC servers; the BLC Studio manager, responsible for creation and management of all BLC video and audio files (currently 4TB); and the Applications Programmer III.

Apply advanced applications programming concepts to design, develop, modify, debug, document and evaluate highly complex programs for foreign language instruction, including working with relational databases and executing moderately complex test plans and designing user interfaces.
Serve as administrator of the BLC’s website (Expression Engine) and blog (WordPress).
Keep current on new developments in coding and programming languages; continue training in programming languages and interface design (continuing education); consult and advise the Associate Director on technology developments relevant to foreign language instruction; attend department meetings and consult with BLC staff, and train end-users.
Required Qualifications
– Advanced knowledge of applications programming: proficiency with PHP, working knowledge of JavaScript, familiarity with HTML, CSS, source code version control.
– Knowledge of other related areas of IT; specifically, familiarity with UNIX (Ubuntu) systems and the command line.
– Advanced skills associated with programming design, modification and implementation.
– Demonstrated interpersonal skills in order to work with both technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization.
– Demonstrated skills to develop conversion and system implementation plans.
– Must be able to communicate technical information in a clear and concise manner.
– Demonstrated ability to interface with management on a regular basis.
– Must be self motivated, work independently or as part of a team, able to learn quickly, meet deadlines and demonstrate problem solving skills.
– Demonstrated advanced skills in web applications, web programming language and object oriented programming concepts.
– Working knowledge of WordPress and Expression Engine; good working knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PhP; some experience in Photoshop; some experience with Linux and command-line tools. Some basic understanding of MySQL or other database programs; some basic knowledge of principles of good design.
– Excellent written and oral English communication skills.
– Bachelor’s degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
Preferred Qualifications
– Proficiency in Ruby, Rails, Git, TDD/BDD.
Salary & Benefits
Annual Hiring Range: $57,000 – $84,600 depending upon experience.
